I use 1and1.com website hosting, and since Friday evening have had trouble getting to the admin side of my site. Users can see the site and enter orders, but I can not manage orders, change prices, or anything that requires admin login. Can not even get to 1and1.com! Problem has persisted all day today.
Around noon I got an email from 1and1, reminding me of the "Refer a Friend" campaign. I called the number and spoke to a very friendly guy, and explained that after the last 4 days, they would be better off running a "Refer an enemy" campaign, as I have several people I hate and would love to see them exposed to the 1and1 experience, but not a single friend.
He explained:
Since last week their server group has been under a cyber attack. Their best info indicates the source is China. Although so far they have been able to prevent its incursion into their customers' domain/hosting servers, they have been unable to clear their admin servers of it, and frankly they do not know what to do. All tech support is engaged in controlling the problem, preventing its spread, and they are just hoping it will clear itself out and move on. HOPING??? Quite the strategy.
But fear not. DHS has 2700 armored vehicles on order to protect politicians from angry mobs, so everything will be A-OKAY!
